Remediation of Bucka Lake from Szigetszentmiklós

Pollution causes

Bucka Lake’s surrounding areas were polluted because the state enterprises operating here in the past backfilled the open pit of the former mine (construction materials deposit) with hazardous waste. The waste disposed on the site has caused significant environmental pollution in the sensitive area of groundwater and has put the health of local residents at risk. Typical groundwater polluting components were molybdenum, boron, chrome and arsenic.

The remediation project

The project goal is the removal of waste and polluted geological layers from the area, on-site protection of non-hazardous waste, on-site stabilisation of hazardous waste fractions and their transport to the landfill, and purification of more than 50,000 m3 of polluted groundwater.

Special project features

The remediation area is located in a densely populated residential neighbourhood with family houses, so we had to build excellent relationships with the local residents.

On-site sorting of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, on-site stabilisation of the hazardous waste and transport to the landfill.

Implementation and operation of a groundwater purification system.

Main project data

Removal (excavation) of pollutants, then sorting them into usable, inert, non-usable and hazardous waste: 170,000 m3.

Waste quantity stored in on-site insulated landfill: 116,778 tons.

Removal of any hazardous waste, endangering human health and posing environmental risks: 53,742 m2.

Purification of polluted groundwater: from 55,000 to 60,000 m3.

Time period: from 2013 to 2015

Financing: EU Cohesion Fund

Project codename:  KEOP-2.4.0./2F/09-11-2012-0001

Client: Szigetszentmiklós Town Council

Total project value: approx. €11 million
