Remediation of Northern Mining Site Peremarton

Pollution causes

Peremarton Chemical Enterprise stored waste and by-products derived from its activity — i.e. various chemical industry processes — unprotected in low depth holes situated on its site. Rainwater washed out different pollutants from the waste accumulated in this way, the soil below the waste became contaminated, and the karstic water was also endangered. The major soil polluting components were zinc and cadmium.

The remediation project

During the remediation of the subject area, the removed hazardous waste and contaminated soil were sorted into recyclable waste, inert waste and non-recyclable hazardous waste. Then the recyclable waste was recycled as primary material or inert building material, while the non-recyclable waste was transported to hazardous or non-hazardous landfills. The remediated area was reintegrated into the landscape by planting native flora.

Special project features

Removal and transport of waste from the area to be remediated was carried out on a temporary service road built on the Peremarton Industrial Park site, bypassing residential areas and reducing their heavy traffic load.

74% of all the removed waste quantity was recycled, which is a high recycling rate.

Main project data

Excavation and removal of toxic materials (zinc sludge, pyrite cinders, burn residues, polluted rubbish) and soil contaminated with toxic materials: 88,800 tons.

Building of a waste sorting and transfer area.

Building of an internal (service) road network, including weighbridge and tyre washer.

Building and operation of a water purification system.

Pre-treated waste quantity: 79,100 tons.

Total recycling rate reached: 74% (Recycling rate commitment: 58%).

Time period: from 2012 to 2013

Financing: EU support: 100%

Project codename: KEOP-2.4.0./2F/09-2010-0002

Client: Mid-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate

Total project value:  approx. €12.6 million
